Dr. Chandler Screven (“Chan” to his many friends and colleagues) has been a major contributor to the field of visitor studies for over 40 years. Throughout this period he has maintained an adherence to the principles of experimental study design, letting empirically derived data show how and why visitors behave the way they do in informal learning environments. His goal-referenced approach makes his findings clearly aimed at not only understanding visitor behavior but also at improving the ability of free access public exhibitions to communicate their intended messages to those visitors. Throughout his career he has been active in mentoring other visitor study practitioners through his many years as a Professor of Psychology (now Emeritus) at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and also through the numerous evaluation workshops he has conducted throughout the United States and in many other parts of the world. This digitized 4th edition of his Visitor Studies Bibliography and Abstracts is testimony to his long-standing commitment to the wider dissemination of the work of others and the continued advancement of the field of visitor studies.
